shanda

Yiddish

also: shande

a shame, a public embarrassment

A shame, a scandal, an embarrassment, especially one committed in public where it reflects on Jews generally. Family gossip has its own shandas, a cousin who skipped the wedding, a business gone bust, but the word carries the most weight when someone's bad behavior makes the news and every Jewish grandmother in a five-mile radius feels it personally.
