Hebrewdescended from medieval Central/Eastern European Jewish communities
Jews descended from the communities that formed in medieval Central and Eastern Europe, historically Yiddish-speaking, and the largest Jewish population in the United States today. Most of the food, jokes, and Yiddish words that get treated as "generically Jewish" in American culture are specifically Ashkenazi, which is worth noticing since Jewish life is a lot bigger than that.
