Sephardi

Hebrew

also: Sephardic

descended from Jews of Spain and Portugal before 1492

Jews descended from the communities of the Iberian Peninsula, expelled from Spain in 1492 and from Portugal shortly after, who resettled across North Africa, the Ottoman Empire, and beyond. Their liturgy, pronunciation of Hebrew, and customs differ from Ashkenazi practice in ways that show up at synagogue and at the table alike.
