mezuzah

A mezuzah is the small case affixed to the doorframes of a Jewish home, containing a handwritten parchment scroll inscribed with the Shema. Plural is mezuzot, and observant homes put one on every doorway except bathrooms, not just the front door. You touch it on the way in or out, and half the people doing that couldn't tell you which finger they use, they just do it.
