yeshiva

Hebrew

a school for Torah and Talmud study

A school devoted to Torah and Talmud study, usually text-based and usually loud, since the standard method is two people arguing over a page together. "Yeshiva" can mean an elementary school, a high school, or the years young men (and in some communities, women) spend studying full time after that. The word covers a huge range, from a modern Orthodox day school to a black-hat institution where nothing but Gemara gets taught.
