ketubah

The ketubah is the Jewish marriage contract, traditionally written in Aramaic and outlining the groom's financial and marital obligations to the bride, including what he owes her if the marriage ends. It's signed before the ceremony and read aloud under the chuppah. Couples now commission artists to illustrate them, so the same document that started as legal boilerplate ends up framed on the living room wall.
