kashrut / kosher

Hebrew

Jewish dietary law, and food that complies with it

Kashrut is the system of Jewish dietary law. Kosher is the adjective for food, or a kitchen, that complies with it: permitted animals slaughtered a specific way, meat and dairy kept separate, and so on. How strictly it's kept varies widely across denominations and individual households, which is why "kosher-style" exists as its own, less rigorous category.
