gabbai
Hebrewthe volunteer who helps run synagogue services
A gabbai is the synagogue member who helps run services, calling people up for Torah honors and making sure the reading is done correctly, catching mistakes as they happen. It's a volunteer role, not clergy, usually filled by someone who's been paying close attention for decades. A good gabbai can tell from three rows back when a word's about to be mispronounced.
